Industrial Electrode-ionization Systems

Industrial electrodeionization (EDI) plants are equipments used on processes which requires ultrapure water usage.

Industrial electrodeionization (EDI) plants are equipments used on processes which requires ultrapure water usage.
The process consist of an advanced continuous demineralization process of the permeate resulted from a reverse osmosis plant. An electrodeionization module consists of several rooms separated by an ion selective membrane. The rooms are filled with ion exchange resin and placed between two electrodes crossed by a continuous current.

In this module occur simultaneously three processes:
– water demineralization by ion exchange
– ions retaind on resin migrate to the  specific electrodes (cations to the cathode and anions to the anode)
– continuous resin regeneration (due to the applied electric current, which splits a part of water molecules into H + and OH-).

Ions are collected in channels between rooms and expelled from the module in the concentrate form (water containing salts)

Advantages:

  • the main advantage of this method is continuous working, without the need of using chemicals for regeneration.
  • this equipment takes up a small space.
  • the concentrate obtained from the electrodeionization (coming from the permeate resulted from the reverse osmosis plant) does not require neutralization and can be recycled or used for other purposes.
  • ultrapure water will have a conductivity below 0.2 mS /cm and can be used in special applications in the pharmaceutical industry, optics, laboratories, semiconductors production.

Electrodeionization installations are mounted on a stainless steel frame with plastic front panel that includes gauges and control. They are featured with a special filter with 5 micron filter cartridge and two pressure gauges, the pressure centrifugal pump made of stainless steel with reduced noise, electrodeionization modules in pressurized containers. They are equipped with valves, measurement and control instruments and a microprocessor.
